Specifically Stated

I am constantly amazed how my kids help me to grow as a person. Recently I was having a wonderful snuggle with my 11 yr old, and I told him how proud I am of him. He looked at me with honest eyes and asked, “Why mom?” What a question! I mean, of course I’m proud of him, but he was looking for specifics. I smiled and started to list out all the things that instantly came to mind. How he has worked so hard in school, putting in his best efforts regardless of the constantly changing virtual schedule. How he is honest with me and communicates what work he needs help with. I love how he has such a kind heart and is a loyal friend. He has really stepped up and helped me around the house and continues to gain responsibility. His love for music is growing and he works hard at his trumpet lessons. His creativity and bravery to try new mediums with his artwork is stunning. And he makes me smile and my heart full every single day. For that I got the most precious words that I am so fortunate to hear every day, “I love you too mom”. Because that’s what he heard, by me saying I’m proud and I’m watching and listening to what’s going on in his life, he knows I love him. How profound! It was the best feeling.

This piece is a reminder about effectively communicating with our children and how important it is to recognize the good behaviors we want them to foster. But it also dawned on me how important this is in business leadership as well. How often do we tell our employees that we are proud of them, of the work they have done? Do we specifically call out good behaviors, or only focus in on the bad? Is there a reward system in place to truly motivate them to excel, or only do the minimum? So often in work we are busy busy and don’t take the time to give specific, positive feedback. I know I have been guilty of this at times.

My challenge to you is to find 1 “winning” example of something you appreciate they do to give to your employees or family. We get what we give in this world. You will be amazed at what comes back to you!
