During the past few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has really wrecked havoc on us all. It’s crazy how the absence of physical connections with family and friends can make you feel weak. Feel anxious and lonesome. Feel just plain sad. This has all hit me like a ton of bricks since March, and it’s been WORK to keep positivity shining for myself and my kids. Thankfully I’ve done a lot to strengthen my core support system this past year, and have learned some hard lessons about swallowing pride and asking for help.
This week’s trip really reminded of how valuable a strong core is. After much debate, we decided to make the drive to Nebraska to visit my family. The boys and I all really needed it, and they were begging to celebrate their birthdays together as they do every year. Getting those first hugs was truly incredible and well worth the 11 hour drive! That feeling of love and safety is indescribable. For those of you that have a loving, supportive family, you know what I mean. For those of you that sadly do not, I hope that you have some special people in your life that make you feel like that. Because man, it’s really the best! My youngest son has really struggled with the lack of social interactions. He’s an extrovert and in lieu of positive contact with his friends he has acted out both with “poor choices” in actions as well as extreme emotional outbursts. Our visit was the best birthday present I could have given him. What a difference a little time surrounded by nature and those you love makes! Now if I can just get him back to a decent sleep schedule.
I’ve come to appreciate my family more and more over the years as I’ve had children, but this pandemic has heightened it even further. Over the years I’ve been extremely fortunate to extend my family to include some special friendships as well. It’s reminded me that you CAN be independent and still appreciate your support system. Love and respect don’t have conditions, they are ingrained into these key relationships. With more time on our hands, reflection is natural and it’s given me time to take stock of my blessings. I am very fortunate that so far my family and close friends are all healthy, and I do not take this for granted any more!
This post goes out to all my incredible family and friends who have stood by me through thick and thin, who call when I’m having a tough day, who mail little gifts and who cook for me (because I do not cook, this will be covered in another post! :). You inspire me to be a better daughter, sister, friend and the best example I can be for Isaak & Blake.
I encourage you, as you face days of struggle, to reach out to someone you think might need a pick me up. Brightening someone else’s day always makes mine sparkle a little more. A text, call or picture can make a difference. Not only will you feel better for putting a smile on someone else’s face, but making that connection will help lift your spirits. My thankful basket is pretty full these days, so please reach out to me if you are looking for a sarcastic, funny story about something crazy my boys did or the latest kids activity I’ve tried that will likely lead to an injury soon because I’m getting too old! Live life smart, but enjoy some calculated risks …. especially for the sake of an 8 year old’s laughs.
